BONK Under Pressure as Hacker Sells Stolen Tokens, Price Drops 40%
BONK, the popular Solana meme coin, has seen its price fall by 40% since a $20 million hack, with the attacker continuing to sell off stolen tokens and adding to market pressure.
Hey crypto fam, let's talk about BONK. The Solana-based meme coin has been going through it lately. We're seeing some serious selling pressure after a major hack earlier this month. If you've been watching BONK, you know things have been volatile, and this situation just adds to the wild ride.
The $20 Million Governance Exploit
Remember that big BonkDAO hack we heard about? It all went down around July 6, 2026. An attacker managed to siphon off an estimated $20 million worth of BONK tokens. How did they do it? They used a sneaky governance proposal, cleverly named Bonk Improvement Proposal #76. This proposal looked like it was going to reward "YES voters" but actually had a hidden clause to transfer a massive 4.43 trillion BONK from the project's treasury to an address controlled by the attacker.
To pull this off, the attacker reportedly spent around $4.4 million to buy up roughly 1% of the total BONK supply. This gave them enough voting power to push their malicious proposal through, especially with low voter turnout. The worst part? There was no timelock, meaning the proposal executed immediately once approved. This meant the Bonk team had no chance to stop the transaction. It's a stark reminder of the risks in decentralized governance if safeguards aren't rock solid.
Aftermath: Price Drop and Ongoing Selling
Since that July 6 incident, BONK's price has taken a significant hit, falling by a hefty 40%. This isn't just about the initial shock; the hacker is still active, adding continuous selling pressure to the market. Just recently, around July 17, the hacker deposited about $4.11 million worth of BONK onto Binance. Before that, they had already sold a chunky 800 billion BONK, which was roughly $2.48 million.
As of July 18, the attacker still holds a massive 2.4 trillion BONK, valued at approximately $6.94 million. This leftover stash is a constant overhang. Traders are definitely keeping an eye on it, worried about more selling that could push prices even lower. We saw BONK's daily trading volume surge by almost 120% on July 17, even as its price dipped by 6.72% in just 24 hours. That's a clear sign of heavy selling. More recently, BONK was down 11% in 24 hours and 31% over seven days as of July 19, with reports indicating that big whales are distributing their holdings.
The Real Talk on Meme Coin Risk
This whole situation with BONK is a big wake-up call about the risks in the meme coin space. While they can offer exciting, fast-paced opportunities, they also come with huge volatility and unique risks. Decentralized governance, while powerful, needs strong security measures like reasonable quorum thresholds and timelocks to prevent these kinds of exploits.
Meme coins are driven by community sentiment, viral trends, and often, speculation, rather than traditional fundamentals. Prices can pump hard, but they can dump even faster. Always remember that meme coins are highly speculative assets. You should never put in more money than you're comfortable losing. Be careful out there!
